WAEC Maths Syllabus (2026): Topics, Revision and PDF

Waec Maths Syllabus editorial illustration

A Mathematics paper tests more than whether you remember a formula. You must recognise the situation, choose a method and show a result that answers the question. The WAEC maths syllabus is most useful when you turn each topic into that kind of practical ability.

This guide is an original study map for Nigerian WASSCE General Mathematics candidates. It includes worked examples and a revision route, while your current official syllabus controls the complete scope and examination arrangements. General Mathematics and Further Mathematics are separate subjects, so make sure the document you use matches your registration.

Understand the WAEC Maths Syllabus Before Choosing A Textbook

Use the WAEC maths syllabus to organise number work, algebra, geometry, measurement and data-related skills. The topic map below groups related ideas for revision; it is not the full official wording, a promise about question frequency or a newly issued 2026 syllabus PDF.

Topic GroupAreas To ReviewWhat Independent Practice Should Show
Number and numerationFractions, ratios, percentages, indices and logarithmsAccurate operations and sensible answers
AlgebraExpressions, equations, inequalities and variationA clear method for finding an unknown
Graphs and relationshipsCoordinates, functions and graphical interpretationCorrect scales and meaningful interpretation
GeometryAngles, plane shapes and circle relationshipsReasons supporting each step
MensurationLength, area, surface area and volumeCorrect formulae and units
TrigonometryRelevant ratios and triangle problemsCorrect choice of relationship and angle mode
StatisticsTables, charts and measures of dataAccurate calculations and interpretation
ProbabilityOutcomes and likelihoodA justified sample space or counting method
Applied problemsFinancial and everyday quantitative situationsTranslation from words into a suitable model

A WAEC maths syllabus PDF should come from a source whose identity and applicability you can establish. Ask your teacher for the recognised copy. A file named “WAEC mathematics syllabus 2026 PDF download” may be useful, but its filename alone does not establish an official revision.

Diagnose the Foundation Gaps First

Fractions, negative numbers and rearranging equations appear inside many later topics. If these are weak, a student can struggle with trigonometry or mensuration even after memorising the correct formula. Start by testing the foundational operations without a worked example beside you.

Write down the exact point of failure. “I am bad at algebra” is difficult to act on. “I change the sign incorrectly when subtracting a negative number” gives you a specific skill to practise. Work on that skill, then return to the longer problem.

Keep rough work organised. Put one main step on each line when solving an equation. Copy values carefully from the question and preserve units in measurement problems. A correct plan can still produce a wrong answer when the numbers change unnoticed between lines.

Worked Example One: Percentage Change

Suppose a school bag costs ₦8,000 and the price rises by 15%. The increase is 15 ÷ 100 × ₦8,000 = ₦1,200. The new price is therefore ₦9,200. You can also calculate ₦8,000 × 1.15.

Now suppose the new price falls by 15%. The reduction is calculated from ₦9,200, not from the original ₦8,000. The reduced price is ₦9,200 × 0.85 = ₦7,820. Equal percentage increases and decreases do not necessarily return a value to its starting point.

This original example illustrates a recurring skill: identify the base quantity. Before calculating any percentage, state what represents 100%. This is more reliable than adding or subtracting a memorised percentage without considering the situation.

Worked Example Two: Solving and Checking an Equation

Solve 3(x − 2) = 2x + 5. Expand the bracket to obtain 3x − 6 = 2x + 5. Subtract 2x from both sides, giving x − 6 = 5. Add 6 to both sides, so x = 11.

Check the result in the original equation. The left side becomes 3(11 − 2) = 27. The right side becomes 2(11) + 5 = 27. Agreement confirms that the value satisfies this equation.

Checking is especially useful when brackets, fractions or negative values are involved. Do not test a solution only in an intermediate line that already contains an error. Return to the original question whenever possible.

Worked Example Three: Probability and Assumptions

A bag contains three red counters and two blue counters. One counter is selected at random, with each counter equally likely to be chosen. The probability of red is 3 ÷ 5. The probability of blue is 2 ÷ 5, and the two probabilities add to 1.

If a second counter is selected without replacement after a red counter has been removed, the bag now contains two red and two blue counters. The next probability of red is 2 ÷ 4. The conditions changed, so the original fraction cannot simply be reused.

Learn to notice phrases such as “without replacement”, “at least” and “exactly”. Their meanings can change a calculation. The WAEC maths syllabus should lead you to interpret those conditions as carefully as you handle the arithmetic.

Geometry and Mensuration in the WAEC Maths Syllabus

In geometry, provide reasons for angle relationships rather than writing a chain of unexplained numbers. Identify the relevant parallel lines, triangle or circle before applying a theorem. A diagram may be a sketch, so do not assume two lengths are equal because they look equal.

For mensuration, decide what is being measured. Area uses square units and volume uses cubic units. Convert lengths consistently before using a formula. If a question gives a diameter, obtain the radius where the formula requires it.

For an original example, a rectangular tank measures 2 m by 1.5 m by 1 m. Its volume is 3 m³. That is 3,000 litres because 1 m³ equals 1,000 litres. Multiplying by 100 would confuse a length conversion with the relationship between cubic metres and litres.

Using Graphs and Data Accurately

Choose a scale that uses the available graph space sensibly and label both axes. Plot carefully, then interpret what the graph shows. A gradient has a meaning determined by the quantities on the axes; it is not merely a triangle drawn anywhere on a page.

For data questions, distinguish the mean, median and mode. Check whether a table gives individual observations or grouped information. An average can be calculated correctly and still answer the wrong question if you ignore what the data represents.

When practising, explain the result in a sentence. A probability should lie between 0 and 1. A negative length should prompt a check. A very large mean relative to all the observations may indicate a transcription or division error. These sense checks can catch mistakes quickly.

A WAEC Maths Syllabus Revision Plan

StageActivityMove On When You Can
FoundationFractions, signs, indices and basic algebraComplete short tasks accurately without help
Topic practiceWork through one area at a timeExplain why your chosen method fits
Mixed practiceAttempt questions without topic labelsSelect the method independently
Timed sectionsWork within realistic time limitsMaintain readable working and sensible pacing
CorrectionReattempt errors after a delaySolve a fresh version without copying

Use a WAEC syllabus for mathematics PDF download as a coverage reference, then pair it with worked teaching and fresh questions. A WAEC maths past questions collection is most valuable when you attempt first and check afterwards. Copying a solution produces a neat notebook without showing whether you can reproduce the reasoning.

The general WAEC study guide explains how to balance subjects. For candidates taking science, the Physics preparation guide shows how graph and unit skills also support practical work.

FAQs

Where Can I Find the WAEC Maths Syllabus?

Download the General Mathematics PDF near the beginning of this page. It supplies detailed coverage to use alongside the worked examples and revision guide. Confirm current examination instructions with your school.

Is General Mathematics the Same as Further Mathematics?

No. They are separate subjects with different coverage and entries. Confirm which one you registered for and use the matching document. A Further Mathematics download should not replace your General Mathematics syllabus.

Does This Article Contain the Full Official Syllabus?

The article is an original topic and revision guide. The separate General Mathematics PDF supplies the detailed syllabus document. Use it with the worked examples and confirm any later examination instructions through your school.

How Many Past Questions Should I Solve Daily?

Choose a manageable number that you can attempt, mark and correct properly. A few carefully reviewed problems can teach more than many copied answers. Increase timed mixed practice as your understanding becomes secure.

Can I Use A Calculator for Every Question?

Follow the current examination instructions about permitted equipment and paper conditions. Also practise estimation and basic operations. A calculator cannot choose the correct formula, identify a wrong unit or interpret the wording for you.

Why Do I Lose Marks Despite Knowing the Formula?

Possible causes include incorrect substitution, unit errors, missing conditions or choosing a formula that does not fit. Review your working line by line and record the precise error. Then attempt a different problem using the same skill.

What Should I Revise in the Final Week?

Use your correction record to revisit recurring weaknesses and complete short mixed exercises. Confirm permitted materials and timetable details through your school. Avoid replacing broad preparation with unverified predictions about the next paper.
