BECE Registration (2026): Fees, Candidate Details and School Entry

Parents often hear “Junior WAEC” and assume every JSS3 pupil registers through the same website. In Nigeria, the examining authority matters. NECO conducts BECE for Federal Unity Colleges and other participating institutions, while states and the FCT have their own arrangements. Start BECE registration by identifying the body responsible for your child’s examination.

This guide focuses on the NECO route and explains what parents should obtain from a school, how candidate information is prepared and why a school bill may differ from an examination body’s published fee. The 2026 examination cycle has already passed as of 19 October 2026; do not use an old deadline as an invitation to register for the next cycle.

Who Handles the Registration?

For a regular NECO BECE candidate, the school coordinates the entry. A parent should not assume that creating an individual NECO result-checking account registers a child for the examination. Registration, sitting the papers and checking results are separate stages.

Ask the examination officer for the examining body’s name, the session and the school’s recognised centre details. If the answer is a state ministry or examination board, request that authority’s instructions. NECO’s fees, portal or resit procedure should not be copied into a state BECE application without confirmation.

A BECE registration portal login is generally part of the authorised school’s work. Parents should obtain proof that their child’s details were captured correctly rather than seeking access to a school’s administrative account. Keep the school responsible for confirming the final entry.

Information to Prepare Before Payment

BECE registration begins with accurate identity and subject information. Write the pupil’s name exactly as it should appear, in the correct order. Compare it with the school’s admission record and birth documentation. A spelling error discovered after results are issued can create avoidable correction work.

The 2026 NECO guidelines make a valid National Identification Number compulsory and require candidates’ photographs in school uniform. Prepare the date of birth, sex, school information and the other required candidate details. Do not assume the same photograph dimensions or capture method apply every year. Where a pupil needs access arrangements, raise the need early so that the school can follow the official process.

The guidelines describe offline capture followed by a paid online upload; an offline record alone does not complete registration. Schools issue a photocard for checking candidate details before the final upload. Keep that validation stage separate from simply handing a receipt to the bursar.

The school should explain the subject entry and any language or religious options that require a choice. A child should not discover on the examination day that the registered option differs from the one studied. The BECE timetable guide explains why the examining body also controls the schedule you should follow.

Fees and the School’s Total Bill

A BECE registration fee is one component of what a school may request. Before paying, ask for an itemised bill showing the examination entry separately from administration, photographs, practical materials or other school charges. A single total labelled “BECE” does not tell you what the examining body receives.

NECO’s 2026 guidelines state a registration fee of ₦13,595 per candidate, while its separate website payment table displays ₦13,959. Obtain the current official invoice through the school and have the examination officer reconcile the amount before payment. Do not resolve a discrepancy by choosing whichever number an unaffiliated website repeats most often.

ChargeWhat The Parent Should Receive

School processing or administrationClear description of the service and price
Photograph or capture serviceWhether it is required and already included
Practical materialsSubjects and materials covered
ResitSeparate applicable notice and eligible subjects
Late or centre-related chargeReason, authority and the condition that triggered it

The signed 2026 guidance also lists these charges:

Registration₦13,595 per candidate in the guidelines
Late entry penaltyAdditional ₦5,000 per candidate
BECE resit₦3,750 per subject per candidate
Syllabus₦2,000 per copy
Unviable centre₦15,625 for a school below the stated 20-candidate minimum

The guidance says applicable stamp duty, service and Remita charges are separate. These are historical 2026 figures, not a next-cycle quotation or a school’s all-inclusive bill. The conflicting website registration figure still needs reconciliation against the authorised invoice.

For the next cycle, use its own notice. A 2026 amount is a historical reference once a new schedule is issued. State BECE prices can differ from the NECO price and from one another. Ask your school for the applicable examination charge and an itemised total bill.

How the School Registration Process Works

Confirm the Examination and Candidate’s Eligibility

The school first identifies candidates who should be entered for the relevant junior secondary examination. Parents should confirm the pupil’s class and the correct examination year. This is especially important after a school transfer, when the new school may need records from the former one.

Do not enter the same child through competing schools in the hope of creating a backup. Resolve the intended centre and entry route with the responsible examination officers. A duplicate or inconsistent record can complicate identification and result retrieval.

Review the Candidate’s Details

Ask to review the data before the school’s final submission where its process allows. Read every field. The fact that a name is familiar does not mean you will notice a swapped letter at a glance. Compare the date of birth numerically rather than relying on a verbal confirmation.

If the school uses a draft list for verification, sign only after checking your child’s row. Give corrections in writing and retain a copy. A message saying “please correct the name” is less useful than one showing the exact wrong spelling and the exact correct spelling.

Complete Capture and Payment Requirements

Follow the school’s announced capture schedule and the examining body’s instructions. A payment receipt alone may not prove that data capture and final upload are complete. Ask what remains after payment and when the child must be present.

Keep the receipt with the pupil’s name and purpose of payment. Where a school pays entries in a group, request the school’s acknowledgement for your child’s portion. Parents do not need to receive a school’s entire bulk transaction record to have a clear record of their own payment.

Obtain Confirmation and the Candidate Number

The school should explain when registration confirmation and examination identification become available. Keep a legible copy of the BECE registration slip or the official equivalent provided for that examination. Store a digital copy alongside the printed one.

A BECE registration number is an examination identifier. It is not necessarily the same as the school’s admission number, a payment reference or a result token. Do not manufacture a number from a “BECE registration number sample” found online. Use the one assigned to the actual candidate.

If You Discover an Error or Missing Entry

Report the problem to the school immediately, giving the pupil’s full name, class, receipt details and the specific discrepancy. Ask whether the authority’s correction window is still open and what evidence it requires. Keep a dated record of the report and the school’s response.

If a pupil’s entry is missing, determine whether payment, capture or final submission is incomplete. Those problems have different remedies. Avoid paying again before the school checks the existing transaction and candidate record, because a second payment may not fix the underlying issue.

For an unresolved matter, ask the school to escalate through its examination authority. Use published official support routes and retain the reference. Do not send a child’s full documents or login details to strangers offering to create a registration number after the deadline.

The Published 2026 Registration Dates

Normal entry ran from 19 January to 1 April 2026. Late entry ran from 2 to 8 April, with portal closure stated as 11:59 p.m. on 8 April. These dates have passed. A school should use a separate current notice for a later cycle or resit, rather than collecting a fresh main-entry payment against an expired window.

After Registration

The next task is preparation, not further form filling. Compare the subjects on the candidate record with the lessons and practical work being completed. Confirm examination dates, arrival arrangements and permitted materials through the school.

After results are released, use the correct authority’s result route. Our BECE result-checking guide explains the distinction between NECO and state results. A candidate’s registration number is worth preserving because it can be needed later for retrieval and school records.

FAQs

Can A Parent Register A Child Directly on the NECO BECE Portal?

Regular school entries are coordinated through participating schools. Start with the examination officer and obtain the applicable instructions. A personal result-checking account is not a replacement for the school’s examination registration process.

Is BECE Registration the Same Across Nigeria?

No. NECO and state examination authorities have different responsibilities and procedures. Identify the examining body before relying on a portal, price or deadline. A state BECE entry should follow that state’s current instructions.

How Much Is the BECE Registration Fee?

Ask for the applicable year’s official examination charge and an itemised school bill. Where published NECO figures conflict, the school should reconcile the current invoice. This guide does not treat one historical figure as every school’s total price.

How Can I Check My Child’s Registration Number?

Ask the school’s examination officer for the assigned candidate number and the relevant confirmation document. Compare it with the child’s name and examination year. Do not substitute a school admission number or copy a sample number from another candidate.

Can A Wrong Name Be Corrected?

Report it promptly and follow the examining body’s correction procedure through the school. The available remedy depends on the stage of registration and the authority’s rules. Keep written evidence of the exact correction requested.

Is the 2026 BECE Registration Still Open?

The main 2026 examination cycle is already past as of October 2026. A resit or new-cycle entry requires its own current notice. An old registration page should not be interpreted as proof that fresh entries remain available.

What Proof Should I Keep After Registration?

Keep payment acknowledgement, candidate confirmation, the assigned examination number and any correction correspondence. Store readable digital copies. These records help the school investigate an entry problem and make later result retrieval easier.
