Kano’s private university sector has grown beyond a single familiar name. Students can now compare institutions with different campus settings and academic emphases, including computing, management, engineering and health-related study.
The useful question is which of these private universities in Kano currently offers the degree you need, on terms you can sustain. This eight-university shortlist uses the current institutional register and official university information. The order is editorial, rather than a verified academic league table, and programme approval should be checked for the intended admission year.
Eight Private Universities in Kano to Compare
1. Skyline University Nigeria
Skyline University Nigeria has been part of Kano’s private university landscape since 2018. Its official website provides institutional, programme and tuition information, making it a practical starting point for an applicant seeking an established private option in the state.
It may suit students comparing a private campus experience with the public institutions in Kano. Before choosing, look at the actual course structure, practical provision and degree requirements. A general university prospectus is less useful than information for the department in which you expect to spend several years.
2. Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria
MAAUN Nigeria is in Hotoro GRA, Kano, with its current address on Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Road. Its official site lists study areas spanning computing, management and social sciences, health-related subjects and other developing academic areas.
The Nigeria identity matters. Applicants should use the Kano institution’s programme and fee information, rather than material for a similarly named institution in another country. It is worth considering for students who want a city-based setting and can identify a suitable degree in the current intake.
3. Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila
Al-Istiqama University is in Sumaila Local Government Area, rather than central Kano. Its official academic pages cover science and computing, arts and social or management sciences, and health sciences. Its educational identity also emphasises moral values.
It may appeal to families seeking a campus outside the busiest parts of the metropolis. The location should influence accommodation and travel planning from the beginning. A student expecting to commute daily from Kano city needs to calculate the real journey before comparing only tuition.
4. Capital City University, Kano
Capital City University is a Kano institution, despite a name that can be confused with Abuja. Its official portal publishes institutional information and provides a dedicated fee-schedule page for applicants to consult by programme.
It belongs on a shortlist for students wanting a private university within Kano’s academic landscape. Use its complete name when searching or making enquiries. The correct state, campus and programme should appear on the application so another institution’s prospectus or invoice is not mistaken for its own.
5. Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University
Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, also known as KHAIRUN, gives its address at Gadon Kaya City Gate on BUK Road. Its official communication describes a science-focused provision across allied medical sciences, science and computing, and engineering, alongside moral and entrepreneurial education.
That combination may suit an applicant looking for technical study within a values-led university environment. The decision should still be made at degree level. Engineering and different health qualifications require their own practical resources and approval, so an attractive institutional description is only the beginning of the comparison.
6. Baba-Ahmed University
Baba-Ahmed University is listed as a Kano private institution established in 2022. It adds another newer option to the state’s university choices and should be identified by its own institutional name and location.
Students should avoid confusing it with Baze University in Abuja or importing another university’s handbook into their decision. For a newer institution, obtain the actual course list, campus arrangements and current admission notice. Those documents are more useful than assumptions based on a shared founder’s name or a copied online description.
7. Azman University
Azman University entered the private university register in 2023. Its official site currently presents computing and science, management and social sciences, allied health and other academic information, with separate programme pages for named degrees.
It is worth exploring for a student who wants to compare newer Kano institutions by course. Its undergraduate-fee page should not be treated as a complete bill when it does not display a usable amount for the applicant’s selected programme. Request the current approved invoice and level rather than filling the gap with an outdated estimate.
8. Elrazi Medical University, Kano
Elrazi Medical University has a dedicated medical and health-science identity. Its official contact information places it at Yargaya District, off Maiduguri Road, and its public programme information includes Medicine, Pharmacy and several allied-health degrees.
It is a focused option for an applicant committed to a healthcare pathway. The exact qualification is essential: Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Medical Laboratory Science lead to different professional roles. A student should establish the current programme approval, teaching arrangements and applicable professional requirements before accepting an offer.
Fees at Private Universities in Kano
The clearest verified naira examples in this comparison come from Elrazi’s public tuition page. They are published programme-category figures, rather than a complete quote for every level or nationality.
| Institution or Item | Published Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Elrazi School of Medicine | ₦6,020,000 | Public tuition category including the described training and practice materials |
| Elrazi pharmaceutical science | ₦3,500,000 | Published programme-category tuition |
| Elrazi allied health sciences | ₦2,520,000 | Published category covering listed allied-health areas |
| Elrazi hostel | ₦1,000,000 | Separately published accommodation figure |
| Skyline, MAAUN and Capital City | Programme-specific quotation needed | Use the current official tuition or fee-schedule route |
| Al-Istiqama, KHAIRUN, Baba-Ahmed and Azman | Request Complete Comparable Fee Invoices | Obtain the course, level and session bill |
Elrazi also displays dollar figures, but those should not be treated as a currency-conversion promise for Nigerian students. Ask which tariff applies to your admission category and what period the invoice covers. The public page does not justify assuming the same total for every year of a clinical degree.
Without equivalent current packages from all eight, it is not possible to responsibly name the cheapest private universities in Kano. Compare tuition, acceptance, practical work, accommodation and other compulsory items together. The national private-university cost guide provides a broader starting point for affordability comparisons.
Admission Requirements for Private Universities in Kano
Regular undergraduate admission generally requires an appropriate UTME result and five relevant O-level credits. The university and degree determine the precise subjects, sitting limit and score. A common general threshold should not be substituted for a course-specific requirement.
For computing, examine the Mathematics requirement and the relevant science or other accepted subjects. For engineering, the science combination is central to eligibility. For Medicine and Pharmacy, read the current professional and institutional conditions rather than assuming that any five credits are sufficient.
Prepare your UTME registration record, O-level result, birth or age document, photographs and any requested identification. A Direct Entry candidate also needs the qualifying result and should establish the approved entry level. Do not assume that an ND or foundation qualification is accepted for every degree advertised by private universities in Kano.
Where a university offer requires a change of institution or other JAMB step, complete it through the authorised process. Keep the final admission records consistent with the actual university and programme, especially after a course change.
Medicine and Pharmacy: Start with the Qualification
Searches for private universities in Kano that offer Medicine or Pharmacy often produce broad health-science lists. Use the exact degree title to narrow them. A BSc in a health-related subject is not automatically a qualification to practise as a medical doctor or pharmacist.
Elrazi publishes Medicine and Pharmacy programme information, while other universities advertise different health-related options. Institutional recognition, permission to begin a programme, academic accreditation and professional approval are distinct checks. The current status for the intended intake is what matters to a new applicant.
Ask where teaching, practical sessions and clinical placements take place. If training involves another location, include its travel and living implications in the budget. The quality of this information is more valuable than a university simply describing its laboratories as modern.
Building a Shortlist That Fits Kano Life
Location separates these private universities in Kano almost as much as academic provision. Sumaila, Hotoro, Gadon Kaya and Yargaya are different settings. A student living with family should test the actual commute; a resident student should examine the hostel arrangement and rules.
Select two or three institutions offering the intended degree, then compare a normal week’s life. Consider study spaces, electricity and internet arrangements relevant to your work, access to practical sessions and the cost of returning home. These are useful questions for every campus visit, rather than claims that one university necessarily performs better.
If your search can extend beyond the state, compare Kaduna’s private university options as well. Keep course and residence assumptions consistent so a lower tuition figure does not conceal a more expensive overall move.
FAQs
How Many Private Universities in Kano Are Included?
Eight institutions are covered. The list is an updated state-level comparison and does not claim that every course at every institution is open for admission at the same time.
Is Capital City University in Abuja?
The institution covered here is Capital City University, Kano. Use the full name and official Kano portal to avoid confusing it with institutions in the Federal Capital Territory.
Is MAAUN Nigeria the Same as a Foreign Campus?
The Kano university is the Nigerian institution. Its admission requirements, programme approvals and fees should be checked using its own current records.
Which University Is the Cheapest?
Complete comparable current bills were not verified across all eight. Ask for the same degree, level and accommodation standard before choosing on price.
Can I Study Pharmacy at Every Medical or Health University?
No. Pharmacy is a specific professional qualification. A university offering Nursing or another allied-health course does not automatically offer an approved Pharmacy degree.
Are All These Universities in Kano City?
No. Al-Istiqama is in Sumaila, and the other institutions also occupy different locations within the state. Plan using the actual campus rather than the state name.
Should I Check Approval After Finding My Course on a Website?
Yes. Establish the programme’s current academic and professional status for your intake. A university website can help identify the course, while the relevant official approval records establish its status.
