Enugu offers several different private university experiences: a city-based institution, a campus outside the metropolis, a Catholic university and newer entrants developing their course provision. A student choosing between them should begin with the degree and campus, rather than the most familiar name.
This selection of private universities in Enugu covers seven university entries and Madonna University’s Akpugo campus. That campus distinction is deliberate: Madonna is one university with campuses in different states. The eight options are presented for comparison, without claiming that all have the same admission status or that this is a measured academic ranking.
Eight Private University Options in Enugu
1. Godfrey Okoye University
Godfrey Okoye University is a Catholic institution associated with Ugwuomu-Nike. It combines a university identity with a faith-based educational setting, making it relevant to families who want religious formation to be part of the student’s wider experience.
Its location and academic environment are useful starting points for applicants who want an Enugu option with an established institutional presence. A student interested in a newer professional programme should still identify the specific teaching location and current approval rather than rely on the university’s overall reputation.
2. Caritas University
Caritas University is in Amorji-Nike and has operated since 2005. Its Catholic identity and campus-based model distinguish it from a city-centre institution chosen chiefly for commuting convenience. It is one of the established names in the state’s private university landscape.
The school can suit applicants who are comfortable with a faith-guided environment and a structured campus routine. When comparing fees, avoid reusing an old Caritas PDF as a current price list. The selected course and admission session should appear on the actual bill.
3. Renaissance University
Renaissance University is in Ugbawka. Its public tuition page covers courses across sciences, management and social sciences, computing, Law and health-related areas. A distinctive feature of the published schedule is its stated inclusion of tuition, feeding and hostel accommodation for one year.
That residential package may be helpful for a family trying to estimate recurring living expenses. Applicants should compare its full package with another university’s full package, rather than set it beside tuition alone and conclude that it is automatically more expensive.
4. Coal City University
Coal City University provides a private university option within Enugu, with a public institutional site describing its academic and admissions activities. Its name is strongly associated with the city, but applicants should still use the official campus address for a visit and application.
It may suit students who want to explore an Enugu-based institution with a range of degree interests. Course availability should be checked against the current intake, particularly where a student has a very specific professional objective. A broad faculty description is not a substitute for a named degree offer.
5. Maduka University
Maduka University is at Ekwegbe, along the Enugu-Nsukka corridor, and appears in the register with a 2023 establishment year. Its location makes it a different proposition from a university in central Enugu, especially for a student expecting to commute from home.
It belongs on the shortlist for applicants interested in a newer residential campus environment. Travel to the actual site is useful before deciding whether the setting suits the student. Families should compare the present facilities and the intended course’s current approval, rather than assume every advertised development is already in use.
6. Peaceland University
Peaceland University publishes campus information for Independence Layout and Emene. Its fee schedule distinguishes faculties, departments and levels, which is more useful than quoting one low tuition amount as the price of every programme.
It is a particularly relevant option for students examining Education or other programmes with a clearly identified published fee package. The applicant should select the university programme and campus carefully, since a similar institutional name can also appear in college-of-education material.
7. Kevin Eze University
Kevin Eze University is in Mgbowo and appears among the newer private university entries, with a 2025 establishment year. Its presence means an updated Enugu list should look beyond institutions that were already familiar a decade ago.
Its newer status also calls for an intake-specific assessment. A student needs an official programme list, application channel and campus arrangements for the intended year. This guide does not attach an invented fee range or claim a professional degree is operating without the necessary evidence.
8. Madonna University, Akpugo Campus
Madonna’s Akpugo campus is physically in Enugu State and is associated with engineering provision. Its other campuses are at Okija in Anambra and Elele in Rivers. The university’s name alone therefore does not establish where a particular student will study.
Akpugo is relevant to someone comparing private university campuses within Enugu, especially for engineering interests. A Medicine applicant should not treat it as the Elele campus. Obtain the exact department and campus on the admission documentation before planning a move.
Fees at Private Universities in Enugu
The figures below preserve the distinction between a complete published package, tuition and other entry charges. They are examples for the stated programmes rather than a tariff for every student.
| University and Item | Published Figure | What to Understand |
|---|---|---|
| Renaissance, History or Mass Communication | ₦1,500,000 | Listed annual tuition, feeding and hostel package |
| Renaissance, computing or Medical Laboratory Science | ₦1,600,000 | Listed annual package for the named courses |
| Renaissance, Law or Nursing | ₦1,800,000 | Listed annual package; acceptance is separately stated |
| Renaissance acceptance | ₦50,000 or ₦100,000 | Higher figure applies to Law and Nursing |
| Peaceland, listed 100-level Education departments | ₦200,000 | Published total combining tuition and specified other charges; confirm residence treatment |
| Peaceland, listed 100-level arts, management and social sciences | ₦320,000 | Published departmental-category total; obtain the current itemised bill |
| Other universities and Madonna Akpugo | Request a Current Comparable Fee Invoice | Obtain a course, level and campus-specific invoice |
Peaceland’s listed Education example is lower than Renaissance’s residential examples, but the packages are different. It would be misleading to call that a definitive ranking of the cheapest private universities in Enugu without matching accommodation, food, course and compulsory charges.
Calculate both entry-year and returning-year costs. A student entering Nursing needs to consider later clinical expenses, while an engineering student should examine practical and project costs. The national private-university fee comparison can help widen a budget-based shortlist.
Admission Requirements for Private Universities in Enugu
Most regular undergraduate applicants need five relevant O-level credits, an appropriate UTME subject combination and the institution’s required score. The specific course determines which credits matter. A general admission page should not be used to override a professional programme’s published requirements.
For Nursing, review the required science credits and the current professional training status. For Law, establish the accepted subject combination and programme approval. For Medicine and Surgery, identify the actual MBBS programme, teaching campus and current intake conditions. A faculty bearing a medical or health-science title may contain degrees other than Medicine.
Direct Entry applicants should bring the appropriate qualification and results for assessment. A university accepting JUPEB for one course may impose different conditions for another. Planning the subject combination early is important; the JUPEB registration guide explains why a foundation result must fit the intended degree.
During clearance, expect checks of identity, academic records and admission documentation. Keep originals safe and provide copies as requested. If a student changes course or campus, the final records should reflect the actual placement rather than an earlier provisional choice.
Medicine, Nursing and Law Need Different Checks
Searches for private universities in Enugu that offer Medicine often return every institution with a health-related faculty. That is too broad. Biochemistry, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Medicine are different degrees with different outcomes and regulators.
The same care applies to campus location. Madonna’s Akpugo option should not be described as its Elele clinical campus. When a university develops a new professional school, applicants should ask which cohort is being admitted and what approval applies to that cohort.
For private universities in Enugu, this course-level approach produces a better shortlist than counting the number of universities alone. Choose the qualification you need first, then compare the institutions that can currently admit you to it.
Comparing Private Universities in Enugu by Location
Amorji-Nike, Ugwuomu-Nike, Ugbawka, Ekwegbe, Mgbowo and Akpugo are not interchangeable locations. An applicant who plans to live with relatives in Enugu metropolis should calculate the actual journey before choosing day-to-day attendance arrangements.
A residential package may simplify transport, but it also means accepting the university’s hostel rules and campus routine. Discuss visiting arrangements, meals and medical support as part of the decision. The best choice among private universities in Enugu is one that is academically suitable and financially sustainable for the whole degree.
Students comparing options across the South East can also consult the Anambra private-university guide. Compare similar courses rather than assuming an institution in the next state is automatically more or less affordable.
FAQs
Why Does This List Include a Madonna Campus?
Akpugo is physically in Enugu State, so it is relevant to a campus-based search. It is clearly identified as one campus of Madonna University, rather than a separate university licence.
Which Private Universities in Enugu Are the Cheapest?
Peaceland publishes some relatively low departmental totals, while Renaissance lists residential packages. A fair cheapest claim requires complete current bills for the same course and living arrangements, which were not available for all eight options.
Is Madonna’s Medicine Campus in Akpugo?
Akpugo is associated with engineering. Madonna’s Elele campus is in Rivers State. The exact degree and teaching campus should be confirmed on the offer.
Does Renaissance Include Accommodation in Its Listed Fee?
Its public schedule states that the listed annual fees cover tuition, daily feeding and hostel accommodation. Acceptance fees are separately stated, so a new student’s first payment can exceed the headline package.
Are All These Universities in Enugu Town?
No. The guide covers Enugu State and includes locations outside the metropolis. Campus geography is important for students planning to commute from home.
Can I Study Nursing Wherever There Is a Health Faculty?
No. A health faculty can contain several different degrees. Verify that Nursing is approved and offered for the intended intake, with the relevant professional requirements satisfied.
Does a University Licence Mean Every Advertised Course Is Accredited?
No. The institution’s licence, permission to start a programme, academic accreditation and professional approval are distinct issues. This is especially important when evaluating newer institutions and recently introduced professional degrees.
