State Universities in Nigeria (2026): Full NUC List, Fees and Admission Guide

Photorealistic Nigerian university campus scene with a state universities text overlay.

Choosing a university by ownership alone can hide the differences that matter most. Two state-owned schools may charge very different fees, admit from different catchment areas and offer different facilities for the same course.

This guide to state universities in Nigeria gives you a practical way to build a shortlist. It also explains how to verify the institution and the programme before you register for screening.

Full List of State Universities in Nigeria

The live NUC Nigerian University System register currently lists 69 state-owned universities. The table below reproduces every institution in that ownership category, with the state and establishment year shown by NUC.

State Universities in Nigeria should be shortlisted by course, not by name alone. After finding a school in the table, confirm that the intended programme is accredited and that the current admission notice matches your qualifications.

The NUC register is the source of record for this list of State Universities in Nigeria. New universities may be licensed and names may change, while programme accreditation remains a separate check.

Use the establishment year as context rather than a quality score. Older institutions may have wider alumni networks, while newer ones may offer purpose-built facilities or less crowded programmes. The useful comparison is whether the intended department is approved, staffed and accepting candidates in the current session.

How State Universities in Nigeria Are Funded

State governments establish and fund these universities under Nigerian law and NUC oversight. The word state describes ownership. It does not mean admission is limited to indigenes or that every applicant pays the same fee.

Some schools publish different charges for indigenes and non-indigenes. Others use one tuition schedule but vary departmental, accommodation or clinical charges. Read the current fee notice for your session.

The NUC’s Nigerian University System register showed 69 state universities when checked on 4 October 2026. Because the register changes, use that live source for the current total.

How to Check NUC Accreditation for Your Course

Find the exact institution on the NUC register. Then check programme accreditation and the school’s current admission notice. A university can be recognised while a newly advertised course is still completing resource verification or has limited intake.

Use JAMB’s admission requirements service to compare O-level credits, UTME subjects and direct-entry qualifications. For Nursing, start with the state universities offering Nursing guide and confirm the current programme status with NUC and the relevant professional council.

Avoid unofficial satellite campuses. If a study centre is not listed by the university and regulator, a familiar university name does not make it safe.

State University Fees and Total Study Costs

Request the current fee schedule for new students and identify acceptance, tuition, medical, laboratory, ICT, development and accommodation charges. Ask which items recur each year.

Add transport and living expenses. A lower tuition figure can be outweighed by costly housing or frequent travel. If the university has several campuses, confirm where your faculty is based.

These institutions may revise charges when government funding or school policies change. A fee figure from an older session should be treated as historical until the institution republishes it.

Admission Requirements for State Universities

Look at the institution’s minimum screening score and the competitiveness of your course. A published general minimum does not promise admission into Medicine, Law, Nursing, Engineering or another high-demand programme.

Consider a realistic alternative course only if you would genuinely study it. Check the subject combination before changing. A lower threshold cannot cure missing credits or unsuitable UTME subjects.

Also check first-choice rules and screening deadlines. Complete every required portal application and upload rather than assuming the central choice alone is enough.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a State University

Ask about lecture sizes, laboratory access, academic calendars, accommodation, internet reliability and transport. Seek several perspectives because one person’s department or session may not represent the entire school.

Visit the campus if possible. A physical visit helps you assess distance, security routines, housing and the location of your faculty. Keep official information separate from personal opinions.

How State University Admission Policies Differ

State ownership does not create one admission policy for every institution. Each university publishes its own screening process, programme requirements and deadlines within the national admission framework. Some place strong emphasis on a post-UTME test, while others use a screening calculation. Catchment or indigene considerations may also differ, so read the current notice from the university rather than a general summary.

Confirm whether the school must be your first choice, the minimum score for registration and the documents required. Meeting a general threshold only allows you to enter the process; it does not guarantee a place in a competitive department. State universities in Nigeria may receive far more qualified applicants than a programme can admit.

Indigene and Non-Indigene Fees

Some state institutions charge different rates based on origin, programme or level. Ask what document is used to establish indigene status and whether the difference applies only to tuition or also to other charges. A candidate who assumes the lower figure applies to everyone can face an unexpected balance at registration.

Use the official fee schedule for the correct session and faculty. Add acceptance, medical, laboratory, ICT, examinations, student services and accommodation where relevant. If payment can be made in instalments, confirm the dates and conditions. State university fees should be budgeted as a complete first-year and returning-year cost, not one headline number.

NUC Accreditation and Professional Approval

University recognition and course accreditation are connected but separate checks. Confirm that the institution appears on the NUC list, then investigate the exact programme and campus. For regulated fields such as engineering, law, nursing or other health professions, check the relevant professional body’s status as well.

Ask whether the approval covers the intake you are joining. A university may be recognised while a new department is still developing facilities or awaiting a professional visit. State universities in Nigeria can expand quickly, which makes programme-level verification especially important. Keep a copy of the current official information you relied on.

Academic Calendar and Learning Facilities

Review the current academic calendar and recent official announcements. You are looking for evidence that the institution communicates clearly, completes semesters and provides a realistic schedule. One isolated disruption should not define a university, but repeated uncertainty may affect accommodation, budgeting and graduation plans.

For your chosen course, inspect the facilities that matter: laboratories, studios, workshops, farms, teaching hospitals, libraries or internet access. Ask students how often equipment is available and whether practical classes are overcrowded. A modern gate or administrative building does not tell you how a department teaches.

Campus Location, Housing and Transport

Some universities have more than one campus, and a course may be based far from the city named in the institution’s title. Confirm the faculty location before estimating rent or travel. Find out whether first-year students receive hostel priority, what private housing costs nearby and how students move safely between accommodation and lectures.

Transport becomes a recurring academic expense when classes, laboratories or clinical placements are spread across locations. Visit if possible and test the route at the time you would normally travel. This practical check can distinguish two schools that look similar on paper.

How to Build a State University Application Strategy

Start with your subjects, O-level result and likely screening strength. Choose programmes for which you meet the full requirements, then compare competition and available alternatives. Do not select an unrelated course simply because admission appears easier. A realistic option should still lead toward work or further study you value.

Keep a calendar of application openings, screening dates and result-upload requirements. If a change of institution becomes necessary, confirm that the receiving school is still accepting candidates and that its portal will recognise the update. Save every application receipt and check both the school portal and central admission record.

Questions to Ask About Student Support

Academic fit includes the help available when something goes wrong. Ask about health services, counselling, disability support, career guidance, security reporting and academic advising. Find out how students resolve missing results, fee-payment errors and course-registration problems. A responsive system can matter as much as a beautiful campus.

Talk to more than one current student and ask specific questions. “Is the school good?” produces opinions; “How long did laboratory registration take last semester?” produces useful evidence. State universities in Nigeria serve different communities and programmes, so direct questions help you judge the experience that applies to you.

Final State University Comparison Checklist

Before ranking your choices, compare:

  • Current NUC recognition and course accreditation.
  • Department-level admission requirements.
  • Indigene and non-indigene fees.
  • Housing, transport and food costs.
  • Programme facilities and practical placements.
  • Academic calendar and student support.
  • Distance from home and emergency travel options.

Use the same criteria for every school. Consistent comparison prevents one attractive feature from hiding a serious weakness and produces a shortlist you can explain and afford.

Graduate Outcomes and Course-Specific Evidence

Look for evidence from the department you intend to enter. Graduate destinations, professional examination results, research projects and employer partnerships can reveal whether the programme turns its curriculum into useful outcomes. Do not rely on a university-wide success story when your proposed course has a different history and set of facilities.

Ask how long the department has graduated students and where practical placements occur. Newer courses may still be worthwhile, but the university should explain what is in place for the current intake. State universities in Nigeria often have distinct areas of strength, so course-level evidence helps you find the institution whose investment matches your goal.

State Universities in Nigeria FAQs

Are State Universities Cheaper Than Private Universities?

They are often less expensive, but there is no universal price rule. Compare complete current schedules and living costs.

Do Non-Indigenes Get Admission?

Yes, subject to each institution’s admission policy. Indigene status may affect fees or admission considerations in some schools, so read the current notice.

Are All Courses Automatically Accredited?

No. Check the specific programme. Recognition of the institution does not remove the need for programme-level verification.
